STARSkate
STARSkate (Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition) is a Skate Canada program designed for skaters who are ready to explore figure skating at a more advanced level. Whether skaters dream of competing or simply wish to refine their skills, STARSkate offers opportunities for personal growth, achievement, and lifelong enjoyment of the sport.
The Program
STARSkate focuses on skill development in four main areas:
- Skating Skills: Edge quality, turns, and stroking.
- Ice Dance: Pattern dances and rhythm skating.
- Free Skate: Jumps, spins, and creative routines.
- Interpretive Skating: Expressing music through movement and artistry.
This program includes private and group lessons with certified coaches, as well as opportunities to participate in assessments and competitions. Skaters advance through levels, each offering unique challenges and rewards.
Equipment Requirements
- Figure Skates: Properly fitted, high-quality figure skates are essential. Consult with your coach for guidance on purchasing or maintaining skates.
- Blade Guards and Soakers: Use guards off the ice and soakers for blade storage.
- Clothing: Skaters should wear fitted athletic wear, skating dresses, or leggings with long sleeves. Avoid bulky clothing.
- Hair: Hair must be neatly tied back for all sessions.
- Off-Ice Gear: Running shoes and a water bottle are required for off-ice training sessions.
Off-Ice Training
Off-ice sessions are an integral part of the STARSkate program. These classes focus on strength, flexibility, balance, and jump techniques to complement on-ice training. Dance and movement classes are also included to enhance artistry and performance skills.
